The latest index published by the Institute for Economics and Peace ranks 153 countries according to the absence of violence.
In Latin America, Costa Rica ranked second, after Uruguay.
The least secure places to live in Latin America were Colombia, Guatemala and Venezuela.
Globally, the most peaceful countries were Iceland, New Zealand and Japan.
The numbers reflect the position of each Central American country in the rankings.
