Happy-hour trucks add to Guatemala’s $250 million smuggling bill

Smuggling is costing Guatemala around $250 million a year, according to the country's fiscal authorities.

Analysts point to a lack of a comprehensive policy to attack the problem.

Makeshift boats cross the River Suchiate loaded with gasoline and other illegal goods from Mexico. And so-called “happy-hour trucks” – two vehicles pass customs though only one is registered – are another of the common smuggling techniques.
