Remittances to Nicaragua dropped 6.7 per cent during 2009, compared to 2008. The amount received was $768 million.

However, the money received in remittances in 2009 was more than what Nicaragua got from international loans and donations.

Remittances represent 12.4 per cent of Nicaragua's gross domestic product. They are sent mainly from the United States, around $560 million, and Costa Rica, some $190 million.
