$300 million needed to fight coffee rust in region

The battle to stop coffee rust will cost Central American countriessome $300 million, according to Guatemala's coffee association, known as Anacafé.

The plague caused Nicaragua's production to drop last harvest by almost 14 percent, Guatemala's by almost 9 percent, while El Salvador's dropped from 1.6 million quintals to 1 million.

The coffee institutes of the region's countries created a cooperative group which will hold its first meeting in February to discuss possible solutions.
