70 percent of Guatemalan workers are in the gray economy

Guatemala’s gray economy employs 4.5 million people, amounting to 70 percent of the nation’s total workforce, according to a government survey.

Lack of formal employment is much higher in rural areas than it is in the cities. The survey says the average wage is $280 a month.
