At least 205 cruises are to be expected this year through the Panama Canal with the 2011-2012 season that begins today.

The first cruise ship to go through the canal this season will be the Island Princess, which set off from Los Angeles with Fort Lauderdale as its destination.

Among the principal companies that have Panama on their itineraries are Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line.
