Belize and Guatemala in new talks on border dispute

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

While relations between Belize and Guatemala are still not back to where we were before a 13 year-old Guatemalan boy was shot and killed in crossfire by Belizean soldirrs on patrol in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve last April, talks about the border dispute between the two countries resumed last week.

On March 15, Belize’s Foreign Minister, Wilfred Elrington and Belize’s Ambassador to the OAS, visited Guatemala to meet with their counterparts and the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, who emphasized the need for the countries to arrive at a definitive conclusion.

The team visited border communities in Guatemala and flew over the Chiquibul National Reserve, which has been vastly affected by Guatemalan citizens who wantonly invade and pillage the forest for their survival.
