Big Five dominate banking in Panama

Five banks dominate Panama's financial sector, the most important throughout Central America.

BAC, Banco General, Banco Nacional, Bladex and HSBC reported earnings for $789 million last year, 64 percent of the total of all banks in the country.

The growth in the economy of Panama was the main reason for an increase in the banks' earnings, boosted mainly by trade and mortgages.
