Bukele faces big economic challenge in El Salvador

Nayib Bukele was elected as president of El Salvador at the weekend with a comfortable victory over the traditional parties of both left and right in El Salvador. He did not, however, convince the electorate, some half of which did not even go to the polls.

For years, El Salvador has attracted less direct foreign investment than any other Latin American country, and that has been reflected in the stagnation of the economy.

High indices of crime and corruption point to a rocky road that will have to be overcome if Bukele's dream of prosperity for the nation is to be a reality,
