Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Leaders of Guatemala’s textile and garment industries announced that they intend to fire 6,000 workers as a result of the increase in the minimum wage that was decreed by the president, Alvaro Colom.

The industry leaders said in a press conference that their companies “will cut their workforces by 10 percent in January in order to cover their costs”.

The minimum wage increase ordered by Colom implies a raise of 14.88 percent for the workers.
