Cafe Antigua, the first product with designation of origin

Friday, August 10, 2012

Cafe Antigua has received the first designation of origin registered in Guatemala, after being registered late last year by the Intellectual Property Registry.

For Guatemala, and especially for the region of Antigua, the protection created by the demonination of origin is an important step, in preventing misuse of the name Antigua coffee, from beans that are not produced in the region, and in positioning Antigua in international markets.

Other countries have for some time used denomination of origin for a variety of products, such as Champagne, which refers exclusively to certain varietes of grapes, produced in this region of France.

Since 2006, Consortium has advised the Genuine Antigua Coffee Producers Association, in the protection involved in the process of denomination of Origin, and in drafting the regulations governing the administration of the program.
