Central America boosts geothermal energy in place of oil

Central America has taken great steps towards lowering dependence on fossil fuels and maximizing use of geothermal energy.

El Salvador leads the region in terms of geothermal generation, having already an installed capacity of 204 megawatts, plus a training centre for geothermal energy development for Latin America and the Caribbean, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank.

Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala have even more potential than El Salvador for generating this type of energy, although they are in need of government support and laws to support the private sector.
