Central America coffee smuggling soars

Rampant coffee smuggling across Central American borders has fueled an increase in physical premiums to record highs and starved the U.S. market of the region's prized beans.

For the first time, beans are heading illegally into Mexico from Honduras, and smuggling of Guatemalan beans into Mexico — a reversal of the normal flow of beans out of Mexico in search of higher premiums - has accelerated to unprecedented volumes.
