Central American low melon yields to impact markets in United States and Europe

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Melon growers across Central America are facing a significant reduction on their productions as a result of weather conditions, said Keny Molina, commercial manager of Grupo Agrolibano, Honduras.

High temperatures during the day and low temperatures at night in addition to windy conditions are the main things that have impacted on productivity across the region.

The yields across the region are around 20 percent less than forecast.

Shortages of the fruit have already been seen in the US and are expected to be replicated in Europe.
