Claro breaks rules in Costa Rica, claims Telefónica

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Spain’s Telefónica claimed that Claro, the brand of Carlos Slim’s América Móvil is guilty of monopolistic practices in Costa Rica’s nascent mobile phone market.

Telefónica, whose brand is Movistar, has objected to the contract signed between Claro and the Costa Rica state and electricity company, ICE.

One of Movistar’s claims is that the contract “is an attempt to open the possibility of providing basic telephony by switching circuits in Costa Rica”, in breach of the current legislation.
