Clean-up of former battery plant could cost El Salvador billions of dollars, officials say

Thursday, January 5, 2012

El Salvador will have to spend billions of dollars to clean up the site of a battery plant near the capital that was closed in 2007 and is polluted with lead, the Attorney-General’s Office said.

An investigation that lasted several months concluded that “the environmental damage totals nearly $4 billion” at the site outside San Salvador, the head of the office's environmental enforcement unit said.

The estimate covers damage to “all the resources: water, air, soil, plants and the final disposal of the refuse and ash” left at the abandoned plant.
