Clinton announces cuts of $3 million aid to Nicaragua

Monday, June 25, 2012

President Daniel Ortega’s wobbly balancing act between Venezuela and the United States has become precarious after a US decision last week to cut bilateral aid to Nicaragua.

The US embassy in Managua announced the suspension of State Department and USAID money to the Nicaraguan government in response to the Sandinistas’ dubious handling of Venezuelan petro dollars and significant complaints of official mischief in the 2011 election process.

In January, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it “a setback to democracy” after Ortega sidestepped Nicaragua’s Constitution, allowing himself to be re-elected.
