Coffee rust could spur mass migration, ICO warns

Some 437,000 coffee workers are likely to lose their jobs this year because of a coffee rust outbreak in Central America, the International Coffee Organization has warned.

Governments throughout the region are striving to fight the plague and halt mass emigration from the countryside to cities and the United States.

About two million Central Americans currently work in the coffee industry.
