Coffee rust fungus reaches region's highlands

The coffee rust fungus that has affected Central America has now reached the region's highland due to a change in the weather.

El Salvador reported the fungus on 74 percent of its coffee crop, followed by Costa Rica, with 64 percent, Nicaragua with 37 percent and Honduras with 25 percent, the International Coffee Organization said.

The international price for coffee reached $1.70 per pound, the highest price in two years.
