Corruption remains big problem in much of region

Costa Rica is the least corrupt Central American country, according to the 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index, published by Transparency International.

Costa Rica is number 48 this year, out of 173 countries. The next closest countries in the region however, are Panama and El Salvador, both sharing spot number 83.

Colombia ranked 94, followed by Mexico at 105.

The last places in Central America go to Guatemala, at number 113, Nicaragua, at 130 and lastly Honduras, which ranked 133.
