Costa Rica debates curbs on Uber

Costa Rica's legislative assembly will, in the coming months, debate a government plan to restrict the number of Uber drivers in order to match the number of taxis in circulation -- currently more than 13,000. Meanwhile, resources are to be sought in an effort to boost conventional passenger transportation.

Under a new scheme, Uber would have to lay off some 10,000 of its 22,000 current drivers.

The plan would also oblige Uber to pay a 3 percent levy over eight years in order to help taxi drivers to renew their vehicles,
