Costa Rica declares emergency on banana crops

The increase of pest populations in banana crops has led Costa Rican authorities to declare a state of phytosanitary emergency for one year.

release from the Ministry of Agriculture’s State Phytosanitary Service, SFE, said the impact of Boisduval scales and banana mealybugs spanned 24,000 hectares of plantations in the country’s Atlantic region.

“The biggest risk that we face is that importing countries impose restrictions, including the return of shipments or market closure," said SFE director, Magda González.
