Costa Rica faces its biggest posts in two decades

Monday, September 10, 2018

The upcoming approval in Costa Rica of new taxes will pose President Carlos Alvarado with the biggest social protest that the nation has faced in 20 years, according to the trade unions.

Today's national strike will hit public services, hospitals, schools, state-owned utilities and other institutions.

The last strike of such importance happened 20 years ago when the unions overturned a plan to remove the state monopoly from electricity and telecommunications.
