Costa Rica is first in English proficiency

In 36th position globally – down one spot from 2017- Costa Rica is first in Central America in English proficiency for a third year in a row, according to Education First 2018.

In Latin America only Argentina, in 27th place worldwide, outperforms Costa Rica.

Guatemala, in 55th place, is second in the Isthmus, while Nicaragua in the 72nd position is last among the Central American countries evaluated in the ranking.

Globally, Sweden displaced Netherlands as the country with the highest English proficiency, while Libya is last.

The index includes 88 countries whose native language is not English (numbers in brackets indicate the global position of each country).
