Costa Rica leads in press freedom
Central America is full of contrasts, as far as press freedom is concerned. While Costa Rica has the highest level of freedom of expression in the region, Honduras is among the worst in the world, according to the Freedom of Information Index published last week by the French NGO Reporters Without Borders.
Another noteworthy case in Central America is that of Panama, which fell significantly from 81st position in 2010 to 113 this year, mostly due to pressure from the government of Ricardo Martinelli, says the organization.
The index addresses the situation of 179 nations, reflecting the degree to which media have access to information.
The figures represent the position of each country of the region in the world ranking.
- Costa Rica (19)
- El Salvador (37)
- Nicaragua (72)
- Guatemala (98)
- Panamá (113)
- Honduras (135)
