Costa Rica on the brink of a migratory crisis over violence in Nicaragua

Thursday, July 26, 2018

The political and social crisis that is facing Nicaragua is threatening Costa Rica with a flood of impoverished immigrants for which it lacks the resources to cope.

The arrival of 3,000 Nicaraguan refugees in June alone, and more than 10,000 requests pending, reflect the fear that his citizens hold for the Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega.

The Costa Rican government is concerned that if the number of refugees rises to 5,000, it would amount to a crisis. The arrivals will be refugees without all but a handful of possessions and no means of earning a livelihood, leaving the government to take care of them.
