Costa Rica ‘playing with fire’ by delaying fiscal reform

Wednesday, July 26, 2017

Results of a technical analysis of Costa Rica’s fiscal situation were presented by the OECD at the request of Finance Minister Helio Fallas.

The OECD’s director of  economics, Álvaro Santos Pereira, said fiscal reforms are necessary to reduce the nation’s debt burden. “Without fiscal reforms there is a very high probability that a serious fiscal crisis will unfold in the near future, with disastrous consequences for growth, welfare and social stability in Costa Rica,” he said.
