Costa Rica received 2.2 million tourists last year, an increase of 4 percent

Costa Rica welcomed 2.2 million tourists last year, a 4 percent increase on 2010, the national tourism institute reported.
Tourism from South America was up by 8 percent, while arrivals from Europe and the United States increased by 4 percent.
In December the number of Brazilian tourists rose by 29 percent, but the United States continued to be the leading source of tourists to Costa Rica.
