Costa Rica will help boost shellfish production

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Costa Rica will launch a program aimed at boosting shellfish production in the Gulf of Nicoya.

The initiative, led by the Environment Ministry, will support hundreds of small shellfish fishermen affected by a ban put in place by the Agriculture Ministry and Costa Rican Fisheries Institute in November.

The fund will help fishermen organize cooperatives and associations to begin training in shellfish cultivation, or oyster farming.
