Costa Rican livestock is carbon positive

Monday, February 11, 2019

Animal husbandry in Costa Rica is carbon positive thanks to the implementation of a strategy that promotes a low carbon factor that has been in place since 2015, says Jorge Segura, coordinator of the National Livestock Program.

What that means is that production of livestock in Costa Rica captures more greenhouse gases than it emits, by planting more trees in the fields where the animals pasture.

The livestock sector is responsible for 23 percent of the gross emissions of greenhouse gases in the country.
