Costa Rican mobile operators speed up 4G

Friday, December 21, 2018

Improvements announced in Costa Rica by Claro in its LTE-Advanced network in 29 cities and towns in September, and those that were pushed forward by Movistar in November, are a sign of higher 4G speeds in the country, according to the most recent Open Signal report.

Claro is an affiliate of América Móvil, controlled by the Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim, while Movistar is a unit of Spain's Telefónica.

The increases awaited next year, however, are unlikely to do more than reduce the gap between the state-owned operator kölbi and both companies. kölbi is currently operating at speeds that are  almost double those of Claro and Movistar.
