Drought could spell hunger and billion in losses

The drought that has hit Central and North America has caused billions of dollars in losses, as well as causing rises in basic food prices and even a possible famine.

The United States Department of Agriculture reports losses for $18 billion in its maize crops, while Mexico reported losses for $11 billion.

Guatemala reported a 50 percent loss in basic food grains such as beans and maize, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported.
