Drought forcing new restrictions on Panama Canal

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

The continuing low level of Gatun and Alajuela lakes, has forced  the Panama Canal Authority  to  announce a second draft restriction on ships from April 29, and a third may follow. The first restriction, announced last month, will be activated on Monday April 18.

The drought has wreaked havoc on the regional agricultural and the low level of the lakes which provide the water for the operation of the locks is causing increasing concern with the rainy season predicted to be delayed.
