Drugs valued at $35 billion a year moved through Central America, says minister

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Drug traffickers move approximately $35 billion worth of illegal drugs through Central America each year, Arturo Corrales, the Honduran foreign minister, said.

Most of the drugs are produced in Colombia and sent through Venezuela, to Central America's "Northern Triangle" of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The drugs are then hauled overland into Mexico, where they are prepared for final entry to the United States.

The income from illegal drugs is believed to fuel most of the crime and violence in Central America and Mexico.
