EFTA makes progress on pact with Central America

The European Free Trade Association – comprising Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland – has announced that it made substantial progress during a sixth round of negotiations towards a free trade agreement with four Central American states.

The talks sought to resolve outstanding areas of discussion with Guatemala. Following the meeting, EFTA reported that further progress was made in the area of trade in goods and services, and the number of remaining issues had been substantially reduced.

The EFTA-Central America negotiations were launched in February 2012 and were substantially concluded, after five rounds, with Costa Rica and Panama in December. The agreement will also include Honduras, with a deal expected to be signed by mid-2013.
