El Dorado lives on in Guatemalan mining

Thursday, September 1, 2011

The legend of El Dorado is alive in Guatemala for several mining companies that have developed gold and silver deposits over the last five years.

Exports of gold and silver reached $528 million last year, boosted by high prices.

The mining industry in Guatemala began with the construction of the Marlin mine, with reserves of 1.53 million ounces of gold and 60.3 million of silver. Marlin, owned by Goldcorp, produced 296,000 ounces of gold last year for revenues of $500 million.
