El Nino threatens Panama Canal shipping
Monday, August 11, 2014
Transport in the Panama Canal could be affected by the drought brought by "El Niño", the canal authority, ACP, said.
The canal operates through a system of locks that require 202,000 cubic feet of water per lock, which comes from rain that gathers in artificial lakes.
Facing a forecast drop in rain, the ACP will have to limit the number of ships using the waterway, depending on their size.
