European Union and Central American Bank for Economic Integration wind plan

Monday, November 15, 2010

The European Union, with support from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, inaugurated three solar energy projects in northwestern Nicaragua that will benefit some 4,000 peasant farmers.

The solar installations were set up in rural communities outside the towns of Las Sabanas, San Lucas and San Jose de Cusmapa in Madriz province, near Nicaragua’s border with Honduras.

A total of $1.17 million has been invested in the projects. Nicaragua relies on thermal energy from petroleum derivatives for 66 percent of its electricity needs.
