Expansion of Panama Canal to miss deadline

The Panama Canal expansion project will be finished six months later than originally expected, said the Panama Canal Authority administrator, Jorge Luis Quijano.

The project was pushed back by a delay in the construction of the third set of locks, which need to be widened to accommodate larger vessels, said Quijano.

The expansion project reached 50 percent completion last month, after finishing the dredging of the Atlantic and Pacific coast entrances, as well as the narrowest section of the Canal, known as Culebra Cut, Quijano added.
