Fewer ships and higher costs spell gloom for Panama Canal

The volume of shipping traffic through the Panama Canal fell by 6.5 percent last year, according to official figures through November.

Original projections for the widened Canal prove to have been very optimistic. In addition, the construction consortium has billed for extra costs that could double the original estimate.
