Firms in El Salvador plagued by extortion

The vice-president of El Salvador, Oscar Ortiz, recognized that criminal extortion of companies is a major barrier to the nation’s economic growth.

Last year’s growth was 2.2 percent, according to official figures, though unofficial estimates say it was lower.*
