Gasoline prices are a family matter in Nicaragua

Tuesday, September 18, 2018

Gasoline is more expensive in Nicaragua than elsewhere in Central America because of high retail margins, analysts say.

The leading importer and trader and fuels is la Distribuidora Nicaragüense de Petróleos, which has close ties to President Daniel Ortega and his family.

"Even when international prices of oil are falling, gasoline in Nicaragua maintains its price," said César Arévalo, a specialist in international fuel markets.
