Guatemala and Belize to hold separate referendums

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

The governments of Guatemala and Belize agreed to hold separate referendums to decide if they should submit their territorial, maritime and insular dispute to the International Court of Justice at The Hague.

The amendment to a bilateral agreement signed in 2008 will allow “…flexibility so that each country can hold a referendum when it is convenient”, stated Belize’s Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington.
