Guatemala and Mexico eye binational hydro plan

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Guatemala and Mexico are interested in a hydroelectric project for the construction of four plants with a combined capacity of 800 megawatts on the border river of Usumacinta, Guatemala's president, Otto Pérez Molina, said.

In the past, the countries abandoned a binational hydroelectric project due to the risk of floods in Guatemala's Peten department, the president said.

The possibility was discussed during a recent meeting with the Mexican president, Enrique Pena Nieto, who is very interested in the project, Pérez said.
