Guatemala announces famine relief for drought victims

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina said that his government would start providing food assistance to thousands of families affected by the famine that has killed about 95 children so far this year due to a prolonged drought.

Pérez Molina said that 53,227 families from 979 communities in the country’s interior have lost their corn and bean crops because of the drought.

He added that his administration needs at least $8.75 million to cover the entire food emergency.
