The main presidential candidates want production of hydropower, geothermal and biofuels, to represent 58% of total generation by 2022, offering incentives such as co-finance for development projects through public-private, as well as tax breaks.

Currently, Guatemala is the country with the region’s most expensive electricity. But it has great potential for renewable power generation. The plan is to create not a single large plant, but several medium-sized hydroelectric facilities, especially on the Usumacinta River on the border with Mexico.
