Guatemala farm sector up by 5.7 percent

Monday, January 13, 2014

Guatemala's farm sector grew by 5.7 percent last year, and growth of 5 percent is forecast for this year.

Last year's growth was due to increases in productivity in sugarcane, African palm, rubber and bananas, said Carla Caballeros, executive director of the formers' association.

However, she added: "The farm sector has been hit hard by low international prices in coffee, sugar and rubber."
