Guatemala is faithful to Taiwan, says top official

Monday, September 3, 2018

Guatemala's government has no intention of breaking diplomatic and commercial relations with Taiwan in favor of China, as did El Salvador recently.

US senator Marco Rubio has claimed that Guatemala has been planning to make such a move, but Jafeth Cabrera, the Guatemalan vice-president said there was no truth in the rumor. "We've had a lot of operations with Taiwan," Cabrera said.

The European Union, too, has had a lot of cooperation with Guatemala, but this weekend it sharply criticized the decision of President Jimmy Morales to refuse to renew the mandate of the Cicig, the international commission against impunity in Guatemala.
