Guatemala tax income from mining among lowest

Thursday, March 13, 2014

The Guatemalan mining sector's tax contribution to the country is one of the lowest in Latin America.

In countries such as Chile, mining contributes 37 percent of the country's total tax income, while in Guatemala the sector contributes with 0.3 percent of the total.

But the industry is paying what the law dictates, however the issue is the State's lack of capacity to make it pay a fair amount, said Jonathan Menkos, director of the Central American Institute for Fiscal Studies.
