Honduras approves new tax in tandem with Clinton proposal to boost drug fight

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Honduran lawmakers approved a new tax package meant to boost revenue for security forces taking on drug traffickers encroaching further into Central America.

The new taxes on the mining, telephone and other industries came just as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Central America businesses and wealthy elite are not contributing enough on the fight against drug-related crime. Honduras is trying to change that, with the tax plan to raise about $79 million a year for the next five years.
